The results of a recent survey conducted by a national law firm outlined that 75% of those cohabitants surveyed were unaware that they did not have the same legal rights as married couples. This is troubling in itself when cohabitation is on the up.
It has also transpired that a vast number of individuals who were living together, were unaware of measures that can be set in place to protect interests in a property, such as entering into a cohabitation agreement. In fact, only 2% of those people surveyed had a cohabitation agreement in place. This is alarming, as before taking the serious step of moving in together it is vital that you understand your rights, so as to protect yourself from a potentially complex and costly property dispute in the future.
If you are considering moving in with your partner, and are unsure of your rights, then please do get in contact.
