Acting on behalf of a wife, a medical professional with earnings of over £150,000, and a property which she had purchased as an investment just prior to meeting the husband. The case involved divorce, and financial remedy proceedings which went to final hearing.

This was a marriage of 4 years, with 6 months of cohabitation.

The husband was unemployed, and had undertaken several different university courses; none of which he completed, all funded by the wife. At the time the parties separated the husband was undertaking a course at a private university abroad. The course fees were significant, and the wife had been meeting these, as well as the husband’s living costs whilst he was studying. The husband had made no effort to find work, even on a part-time basis.

The husband was seeking maintenance of £3,000 per month on a joint lives basis, payment of his university fees to the conclusion of the course (circa £60,000), and a lump sum of £2,000. The wife sought a clean break.

The husband was awarded a lump sum of £10,000,
