If you have decided to proceed with the divorce, and you will be the one lodging the divorce petition at the court, you will be known as the petitioner within the proceedings. The petitioner essentially has control over the process, as they will be the one who drives the divorce forward.
If you are on the receiving end of a divorce petition, you will be known as the respondent.
